CHEST COMPRESSIONS

Begin CPR by performing the first cycle of 30 chest compressions.

Position your hands in the center of the victim's chest. Your arms should be vertical. As you give each compression, your elbows should not bend. The weight of your upper body is the driving force of each compression. Allow the victim's chest to recoil between each compression.

Chest compressions must be performed rapidly and with minimal interruptions, at a rate of at least 100 compressions per minute. That is nearly 2 compressions every 1 second. If another person is available to assist, that person should retrieve the AED, turn it on, and attach the pads.

• For an adult, each chest compression should be done with two hands and compress at least 2 inches but no more than 2.4 inches of the chest.

• For a child, each chest compression should be done with one or two hands (depending on the size of the child) and compress approximately 2 inches of the chest.

• For an infant, each chest compression should be done with 2 fingers and compress approximately 1.5 inches of the chest.
